The museum is considered as the most popular natural history of China, originally founded as National Central Museum of Natural History. Opened in year 1959, the museum is the first comprehensive museum of natural science in the country. Scientific research, science popularization and specimen collection being the primary motive of the museum, thousands of artifacts and specimens are conserved in the museum. Though there are thousands of artifacts in the museum's permanent collections, there are temporary exhibitions held here, featuring diverse topics related to science and nature.
