City: Georgetown
Description:

This heritage building is housed in a restored villa that was once the residence of Syed Alatas. The Penang Islamic Museum holds the exhibition detailing the role and contribution of Malay leaders in the development and propagation of Islam in Penang. The gallery also provides details on key 19th and 20th century public figures and their cultural influence on Penang. The displays feature the beauty of Muslim iconography, as well as the history of Islam in Malaysia through a number of 19th century paintings. Upstairs is the main event, a huge life-sized diorama of a dock scene depicting a maritime-oriented haj (pilgrimage to Mecca).
