Having a special place in the hearts of Malaysians, Merdeka Square stands in the middle of numerous historical buildings in the town. Being also a place where one of the tallest flag poles of the world is located, the square has a place in the literal heart of Kuala Lumpur. Also translated as Independence Square, it is the place where the Union Jack was lowered for the last time on 31st August 1957 and later the country gained independence.
