Opened in 1899, the Perth Mint was used to refine gold and manufacture half sovereigns and gold sovereigns that can be used as currency in the colony. It has played an important role in the development of Western Australia's gold industry. Today it manufactures most of Australia's legal precious metal coins like Australian Platinum Koala coins and Australian Nugget gold coins.
