Opened in 1991, the Australian National Maritime Museum is one of the six museums directly operated by Federal government. Housing extensive permanent collections in 7 big exhibition spaces, there are also temporary exhibitions carried out in the museum. The seven galleries of the museum are namely - Navigators, Eora-First People, Passengers, Commerce, Watermarks, Navy and Australia-USA, each housing different items related to maritime. Moreover, there are museum ships which are open for visitors to explore by going aboard and some of the small vessels could be seen from outside.
