Karekare is the next beach north of Whatipu. It's considerably more popular and there are lifeguards patrolling the beach during summer. It's one of the most spectacular beaches in Auckland, and a costal settlement. It's part of the Waitakere Ranges Regional Park, and known for surfing, walking and picnicking.
