It's a Mary consecrated statue on a column located in the middle of Marienplatz. It was erected in 1638 to protect an oath made by the Elector Maximilian I after Munich was occupied by the Swedish under Gustav Adolf during the Thirty Years' War. It was built to celebrate the end of Swedish occupation and is topped by a golden statue of Virgin Mary standing on the crescent moon as the Queen of Heaven, created in 1590.
