It was originally built around 1200 as a center of Flemish wealth, then completely destroyed by German artillery shelling in 1916, again the Cloth Hall was rebuilt, the project completing in 1962 and the symbol of a resurgent city. It was one of the largest commercial buildings of the Middle Ages.
