The Museum of Islamic Art, which has been closed since 2003 for massive renovations, reopened in September 2010 and it was well worth the wait. The 8-year long renovation project of around US$10 million has produced a very impressive result in this museum. The museum now holds an extensive collection of over 10,000 pieces, including mainly Egyptian art from the Fatimid, Turkish, Persian and other related periods. The artworks include woodwork, ceramics, stucco, glass, metalwork, textiles and carpets.
