Kariye Museum or Chora Museum, based near Edirnekapi city walls over the Golden Horn is home to Istanbul's most spectacular and preserved collection of Byzantine mosaics and frescoes. The museum's building was itself constructed as a Christian Church in the 5th century, later reconstructed into a mosque in 16th century and later again renovated and converted into a museum in 1948. The features include mosaics displaying the life of Jesus Christ and Virgin Mary as well as frescoes including the Resurrection (Anastasis) and the last judgment (Deesis).
