Built between 1823 and 1830 by the architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel, the Altes Museum is one of many internationally renowned museums and masterpieces on Museum Island, and is a great work of neoclassical architecture. The permanent exhibition named 'New Antiquity in the Old Museum' holds a significant collection of classical antiquities and gold treasury from Greek and Roman art. The notable exhibits include stone sculptures, clay and bronze figures, vases and precious silverware from Greek antiquity. The portraits of Caesar and Cleopatra, sarcophagi, mosaics and frescos represent the Roman art.
