Neues Rathaus is one of the most recognizable landmarks in the city and is probably the most impressive building on Marienplatz, really a stunning piece of architecture. Officially, this is the place where Munich's Lord Mayor grinds away for the benefit of the citizenry. The crowning glory of the New Town Hall is its world-renowned Glockenspiel, which is a carillon with 32 life-size figures and more than 40 bells. The top half of the Glockenspiel tells the story of the marriage of the local Duke Wilhelm V to Renata of Lorraine.
