The Museo Teatrale alla Scala is a theatrical museum and library which displays a superb collection of musical instruments and paintings along with precious ceramics and portraits of renowned artists. The museum not only focuses on the history of opera or the opera house, it also extends its scope towards Italian theatrical history which includes displays relating to the famous stage actress Eleonora Duse and to the Commedia dell'Arte. The opera house owes its name to Santa Maria della Scala, the church that once stood on the same site.
