Real Jardín Botánico de Madrid, based at Murillo Square, is a botanical garden that offers a lovely green respite in the middle of a very busy capital city. Founded by Ferdinand VI in 1755, the garden houses some interesting features like the gates known as the Puerta de Murillo, the Villanueva Pavilion and the Puerta del Rey. Highlights of the collections include the drawings and manuscripts in its archives, herbaria and flowerbeds featuring a display of valuable living plants with over 5,000 different species. The greenhouses in the garden display the state-of-the-art plant technology where visitors can learn about different gardening technologies.
