Tucked in a former funeral home and a historically black part of town, Tremé where generations of city's musicians grew up and learned to play is based the Backstreet Cultural Museum. With a mission to present and preserve the unique cultural traditions of New Orleans' African American society, the collection of the museum includes jazz parades, skeleton gangs, the Mardi Gras Indians with their handmade and proto-Vegas costumes collected by Sylvester Francis.
