The lava flow from ancient volcanic eruptions in the Castelli Romani reached approximately to where Cecilia Metella is. The rock was used to construct the Appian Way. A few steps after Cecilia Metella the original stones have been exposed for about 30m. There are further lengthy stretches of exposed stone about 500m further on. In parts of the later stretch you can see grooves made by Roman carts.
