Founded in 1809 by Napoleon I and built on an ancient fourteenth-century convent of the Humiliaten, Pinacoteca di Brera is Milan's premier art gallery which houses one of the foremost collections of centuries-old paintings from Italian masters including Caravaggio and Raphael. The museum's collections consist mainly of Italian paintings from the Quattrocento to the Rococo period. It also has a significant collection of Venetian and Lombard paintings from the Renaissance and Baroque periods. The gallery is one of the country's most important art galleries.
