Established in 1874, the San Diego Natural History Museum is the oldest scientific institution in southern California which traces its roots to an enthusiastic group of amateur naturalists, who formed the San Diego Society of Natural History. The museum houses everything pertaining to natural history - insects, dinosaurs, mammals, geology, and besides the exhibits, it also hosts several visiting exhibitions. The museum also features a giant Dolby Digital 3D theater showing films on the natural world.
