Located in the heart of Tokyo in the Marunouchi district, this is one of the few major art museums in central Tokyo which focuses on 19th-century Western artwork. Designed in 1894 by the British architect Josiah Conder, the structure was then erected by Mitsubishi as the first Western-style office building in Tokyo's Marunouchi district. And some 40 years later, it has been reconstructed on the same site according to Conder's original plans. Symbolizing the modernization of Japan in the late 19th century, it has been reborn as the Mitsubishi Ichigokan Museum, an icon of the Marunouchi district, and opened in April 2010. The museum's artwork includes the Maurice Joyant collection, a group of over 200 works by Henri Toulouse-Lautrec.
