Located in the heart of city's Cultural Precinct, the Christchurch Art Gallery is the largest art institution in the South Island and also home to one of New Zealand's most important public art collections. The Museum houses an interesting permanent collection divided into historical, 20th-century and contemporary galleries, as well as temporary exhibitions featuring New Zealand artists. This gallery plays an important part within New Zealand's network of galleries and museums. This museum is currently closed following the Christchurch earthquake, and is expected to reopen in mid 2014.
