Description:
The house is one of the only country estates left and is home to one of the most beautifully situated historic houses in the city. Thomas Pell purchased the land on which the mansion now sits in 1654 from the Siwanoy Indians. Pell family descendant Robert Bartow and his wife purchased part of the old manor and built the mansion in 1836. The family lived here for 50 years, until the Bartow's children sold the estate to the City of New York in 1888.
