Hagia Irene is a former Eastern Orthodox Church and one of few Byzantine-era cathedrals which were never converted to a mosque, after the Ottomans conquered Istanbul in 1453. The building reputedly stands on the site of a pre-Christian temple, in fact, it is recognized as the first church to be built in Constantinople. From the 1700’s onward, the church has been a renowned museum.
