First private farm in Australia, set up as an experiment to see if the colony could become self sufficient, and stands on the site of the first land grant in Australia, made in 1789 by Governor Phillip to the former convict, James Ruse. He was granted one and a half acres of land and also provided with six hens and two sows. He was granted an additional 30 acres of land for successfully proving that a new settler could feed and shelter his family with little assistance from the government.
