City: Istanbul

Hagia Sophia, a great architectural beauty and an important monument for Ottoman and Byzantine Empires is based in Sultanahmet. The museum was a church prior to 1935 and was reconstructed for three times by three emperors and was later converted into a museum by a Cabinet decision upon the proposal of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. Highlights feature around 107 columns depicting the Byzantine decorative art, imperial monograms, mosaic panels, Islamic calligraphic roundels and other decorative art carved on the doors and walls inside.
