Built by the Romans, the Hippodrome was originally used for chariot races, coronations court ceremonies and parades. It was the center of Ottoman life in Istanbul for more than 400 years. The Hippodrome no longer stands, but some of the obelisks and statues used to decorate the building, can be seen in the place today. Some of the monuments that can be seen here are Serpent Column, Statues of Porphyrios, Obelisk of Thutmose III and Walled Obelisk.
