Also known as Walls of Constantinople, the Old City Walls have protected Istanbul since it was founded as a capital of Byzantine Empire. The walls were largely maintained intact until 19th century when sections began to be dismantled. The wall contained nine main gates and various smaller posterns. Some of these gates can still be seen here. The vicinity of these walls has been improved through the restoration and renovation work.
